Nueva Escuela Infantil Betània Patmos- Barcelona - Spain
The project consists in the construction of the new kindergarten building of Escola Betània Patmos in Barcelona that works as the new gate to the whole campus. The project is located in a residential neighborhood with isolated buildings surrounded by parks and indoor garden areas. This is why the most important fact was to reduce the visual impact of the building from the outside. The school is laid in a place with a great slope of the land and it adapts perfectly to the lay of the ground, burying when the ground allows it and adjusting to the existing rock when the digging was not possible. The result to this is a terraced building where all the classrooms have a direct exit to the playground, which is the deck of the ones below.
The building is organized very clearly in 3 different parts. First of all, we find the classrooms which are organized in a comb-shaped plan in each floor and count with a double circulation: interior without any corridor through the classrooms that can be joined by opening its sliding doors and exterior through the playground under a big pergola.
The different floors are connected each other through a central space that works as a vertical communication core that consists of ramps, stairs, elevator and restrooms. The entrance to the building opens directly to this space that has been designed to be a learning space as being a place where all the students of the school can meet. Is formed by a sequence of wide and open spaces that are connected each other and enable the entry of natural light.
Finally, on the other side of this big space are located the communal classrooms (arts and crafts, music and sports), management spaces, the dining room and the kitchen.
The school has been designed under sustainable and energy efficiency parameters that will allow achieving a Leed Gold certification. The big amount of surface of decks resulting from a terraced building are used as a rainwater collector. Then the water is stored in a tank and then reused for watering the green spaces. The external finish of the facade is bare concrete combined with aluminum and wood for the wall openings. The southern facade is protected from the solar radiation with vertical slats and pergolas.
